Hertzler Tailings Impoundment

The Stillwater Mine is an underground palladium and platinum mine located just east of the city of Nye in south-central Montana. DelHur was contracted to construct a Tailings Impoundment.

The project work scope included the removal of surface soils/unsuitable material, preparation of embankment foundation, open excavation and embankment of Cell 2 Tailings basin, basin underdrain outlet pipe alignment, LAD pond expansion and processing of basin underdrain material. Additional work activities consisted of subgrade surface preparation for geosynthetics, excavation and backfill of anchor trenches, supply and installation of GCL/smooth HDPE geomembrane/textured HDPE geomembrane/non-woven geotextile on 60 mil HDPE geomembrane in basin, supply and installation of a wind ballast system, supply and installation of stud liner and pipe boot at the basin underdrain collection structure, and supply and installation of pipe appurtenances.
