Telluride Regional Airport
The Telluride Regional Airport (owned by the Telluride Regional Airport Authority) is a public airport located five miles west of the town of Telluride, Colorado. The airport property spans 542 acres and rests at 9,078 feet above sea level, making it the highest commercial airport in North America. The airport has only one runway and because of the altitude, weather conditions, and its location on a plateau; it can be very challenging for pilots to fly in and out of this destination. For many years the airport’s single runway contained a notorious dip in the middle of it. Beginning in 2007, the Airport Authority began what would amount to several phases of construction projects over 3 years to correct this problem. DelHur was awarded Phase 1B which consisted of the construction of the north buttress area and the construction of the south fill embankment. Double shifts were utilized in order to complete the project on schedule and the entire project was performed without airport closure. Major work activities included clearing and grubbing; unclassified shale excavation; mass rock excavation; topsoil/muck excavation; permanent runway construction; pavement marking removal; 6-inch and 12-inch perforated pipe installation; 36-inch Class V RGRC installation; and the removal of an existing fence.
