Design/Build project for the design and construction of a remote-handled low-level cask vault facility for the disposal and storage of radioactive waste. DelHur was a teaming partner with Prime Contractor AREVA Federal Services (AFS). DelHur provided constructibility reviews and developed the Construction Plan during the design phase. For the construction phase, DelHur provided civil construction services including earthworks, site development, and infrastructure.

Major work activities included:

  • Civil survey support
  • Clearing, grubbing, and initial site grading
  • Installation and maintenance of erosion control and stormwater pollution prevention measures
  • Construction of a stabilized entrance and temporary driveway along the site access route
  • Transformer pad construction
  • Construction of two truck holding pads
  • Fabrication and installation of permanent guard posts, parking stop logs, and signage
  • Excavation, fabrication, installation, testing, and backfill of underground utilities including electrical, potable water, fire water, and sanitary sewer systems
  • Repair and restoration of roads where excavation and utility installation impacted existing roadways
  • Grading and subgrade preparation for permanent access road alignment and parking areas
  • Processing, transportation, and placement of pit-run gravel course and crushed gravel base course
  • Waste cell excavation and disposal cell subgrade preparation
  • Installation and inspection of geotextile cell liner, drainage course, vault components, backfill around/between vaults and remainder of the waste disposal cell
  • Finish grading of the vault yard including installation of geogrid and geotextile material on prepared fill and pit-run gravel course and crushed gravel base course
  • Construction of a concrete drive strip and snow removal area
  • Lifting, rigging, and handling support for offload receipt of vault components
  • Inspection, custody, maintenance, and storage of vault components prior to installation
  • Construction of a perimeter security road
  • Procurement, transportation, inspection, testing and installation of vault perimeter drainage material
