Monticello Millsite Stream Stabilization/Wetland Complex

City of Monticello
Monticello, Utah

From 1940 through the early 1960s, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) predecessor agencies actively mined palladium and uranium and processed it in the Montezuma Creek Valley in southeastern Utah near the city of Monticello for use throughout the DOE weapons complex. Since the site’s closure, contamination of ground and surface water with uranium (and its decay products), as well as heavy metals to include: arsenic, selenium, vanadium, molybdenum and manganese have been documented. DelHur was contracted to perform reclamation activities at the mill site.

The project work scope included: diversion/maintenance of Montezuma Creek, removal of common material from channel alignment, placement of common materials to subgrade elevations, construction of new wetlands along channel alignment – ranging from 1 to 3 acres in size, processing/placement of alluvium for new channel alignment and wetland lining, placement of topsoil over upland seeding, wetland seeding, and live willow cuttings planting.
